Karate

I actually went to karate tonight, for the first time in at least 3 weeks. I hadn't meant to miss that much, just stuff kept coming up. A family dinner, a band concert, the parade, looking for Rylea, a dentist appointment that ran late--you know the usual stuff.

I walked into the dojo and sensei said, "Who are you?" I'm sure he got that from me, because I've said it before when someone has missed a lot of classes. That, or "Oh, look, a new student!"

And that's what I replied, "I'm a new student and I want to join your dojo."

There was only Joshua and me there, so sensei asked us what we wanted to work on. I said that I'd missed so much class lately that I was up for anything. Joshua asked to go over kata, so we spent most of the class going over kusanku kata bunkai. When we had finished that, we went over kusanku sai--the kata that's kicking my butt.

"It's not learning the moves," I explained to sensei. "It's coordination with the sais." That's my biggest problem, learning to control the sais.

I've really gotten away from working out outside of class. I need to get back in to it.

The rest of class was spent discussing what to do with our two students who will be ready to test for their jr. shodans soon. We mostly talked about how to keep them interested for the time they will spend between jr. shodan and when they are old enough for full shodan.

Tomorrow, we are supposed to have guests from the Greenville dojo come work out with us. That ought to be good.

Kusanku sai! That's what I'm learning right now. It's the first time all that having some fencing experience has actually helped me in karate. Usually it just messes up my footwork. Handling the sais seems to come easier to me than most of the other students, and I attribute it to handling swords before - though the flips are still a trial.

OT: We'll be driving by to Jackson on the 21st. Are you going to be around that day?

Excellent. I'll give you more specific times as soon as Rob figures out when he can leave work the day before. You get to meet everybody this time!
