If You Left At Halftime

well, I can't really blame you. I mean, Troy was leading LSU 24-3 at the half. What's worse, LSU just didn't look like they could do anything.

The defense was porous as a sieve. Troy seemed to be able to move the ball at will. The offense couldn't get anything going. Jarrett Lee had but two complete passes, unless you count the interception he threw, which was returned for a touchdown. Fans booed him off the field, and Les Miles finally benched him.

True freshman Jordan Jefferson took over, but he wasn't much better than Jarrett Lee. He didn't throw an interception, but he didn't complete a pass either.

Their entire game could be summed up in one play.

Right before the half, LSU drove down into field goal range. On the ensuing play, the holder fumbled the snap, then picked up the ball to try to throw it--well, the commentator put it best when he said "This looks like the Three Stooges."

Things didn't look much better when the third quarter began. Troy received the kickoff and marched right down the field to score a touchdown on their first possession of the second half. The extra point made it 31 points.

They would not score again.

The question was, would they really need to? After all, they were ahead by 28 points, and nothing in LSU's play so far had indicated that they would be a threat. Indeed, there were less than two minutes left in the third quarter when LSU back up quarterback Jordan Jefferson ran for the team's first touchdown of the day.

The fourth quarter opens with the score Troy: 31, LSU: 10 and Tiger Stadium almost empty. Those that stayed were well rewarded for their loyalty, because LSU absolutely exploded in the fourth quarter, scoring 30 points for the most amazing comeback in the school's history to win 40-31. Brandon Lafell scored a touchdown; Charles Scott scored a touchdown; Quinn Johnson scored two touchdowns; Colt David missed an extra point, but redeemed himself with a 27 yard field goal.

Back in the first half of the game, one of the commentators remarked that somebody forgot to tell Troy that they were supposed to lose this game. It certainly looked like they hadn't read that script. But what happened in the fourth quarter?

I guess somebody also forgot to tell them that LSU plays sixty minutes of football.
