Mountains

One of my favorite quotes was attributed to him, though I've never been able to verify it.

You never conquer a mountain. You stand on the summit a few moments, then the wind blows your footprints away.

Sir Edmund Hillary passed into immortality today.

And the mountain is still there.

Saluting him.

Well said.

Believe it or don't, but I was in England when Sir Edmund conquered Everest (I was eight years old, Dad was stationed in London). It was like the moon landing... you cannot begin to imagine all the publicity and sheer pride in his accomplishment. The Empire was coming unglued at that time, and the Brits really needed something... anything... to restore their national sense of self.

It's something I'll never forget.

Sus, thank you.

Buck, I believe you. It must have been something. I remember the moon landing, but kind of vaguely. I was only 4 at the time.

I watched the first moon landing live in a Japanese after-hours dive bar/eatery, with a couple of my buddies, a couple of bar girls, and the proprietors of the bar/eatery. About eight of us, all told. It was sorta weird, in that the teevee commentary was mostly Japanese, but the occasional English bits of audio would get through...and the girls translated (in a manner of speaking) the Japanese for us.

Another memorable occasion, that was... accompanied by a rather memorable hangover, too.
