This day 6 years ago was one of the scariest ever for me. You have to remember how close I live to NYC, so I didn't know if neighbors were up there, and fortunately my sister who lived in the area nearby Ground Zero was here in NJ with my parents. My other sister was also home and not there for business like she often was. JC's cousin watched the towers go down as she was trying to get into the city emerging from the tunnels over from NJ. We know people for whom it took ALL DAY to try to get home, covered in the soot of the explosions. I remember worrying about neighbors who worked in that area. I have a friend whose sister is among those whose bodies was never recovered. Todd Beamer of "Let's Roll" fame lived about 2 miles from my house. I can still point the house out, and I've seen his wife and kids about town. Yes, I understand the impact too well.
It seems like we all know someone, or someone who knows someone, who was there. 9-11 is THE defining moment for anyone who was above the age of three or four on that day. Much more vivid for some than others, but defining nonetheless.
Dani, my heart goes out to all of you who had to live through that terror. I am glad your family was safe.
Buck, you are so right. My pastor has a personal friend who was working in Tower 2 when it was hit. She started to leave the building, but the announcement came for everyone to go back to their desks. She decided, like a good Mississippi girl said my pastor, to watch from outside the bulding and escaped safely.
My dad told me once that some day there will come a point that all of your live will revolve around. Kind of like a BC/AD moment. For him, it was WWII. For the rest of us, it is 9/11.
