A tomato sketched from a painting. It was really hard to sketch from a painting. Everything seemed so flat that it was hard to judge the tonal values I needed.
No more of that for me!

One of the biggest problems I have with my young artists is teaching them tone/value differences. They tend to draw flat. I work and work to teach them shading. When we switch over to painting, I have to start over again. They cannot seem to see value difference in paint/color and they paint flat. I have some students that have never gotton it.
When you draw from a painting, sometimes you have to draw what you know to be true and not what you see. photo's can be deceiving too.
