I've always known that I am not pretty. Jessica Simpson, Julia Roberts, Brittney Spears and the like have nothing to fear from me.
In the old days, I would have been referred to as plain or even homely.
I don't keep a lot of mirrors in my house. If I can avoid seeing myself, I can avoid thinking about it.
I was in Wal-mart doing my weekly grocery shopping. Cody had written something on my list called CleanSafe. I had no idea what CleanSafe was, but I assumed it was some kind of household cleaner. I was wandering down the household cleaner aisle minding my own business, looking for whatever CleanSafe was. There was a little girl chattering away to her mother. When she saw me, she stopped talking and her eyes went wide.
In a completely awestruck voice, she said,
"Wow, that's an ugly girl!"

Beauty is as beauty does. That was one ugly little girl you into at Wally-World, Becky.
should have been "...RAN into at..."
Sheesh.
Hello Becky,
First time on your site. I put "Isshinryu" into a search engine and found your site. Believe it or not, there's very few Isshinryu practitioners blogging. How long have you been training? What rank are you? When I get a chance, I'll come back to read some of your posts. Be well.
John
Hi Becky,
I've previously posted as "Sam" but my real name is Becky, too. I couldn't let this post go by without putting in my two cents (and sense of dismay) at what that little munchkin said. Although children can be cruelly honest, in this case, she was greatly mistaken! Your photo shows you to be a good looking lady! Maybe it was just that you were concentrating on the CleanSafe so hard.
I'm enjoying the sketches, by the way. Keep it up! My son just graduated from college as an art major and, although he has a gift for watercolor, he made himself take class after class in drawing because he felt he was weak in that aspect. My hat's off to you. (I can't even draw a cat)
Thanks Buck and Bec. It was a very young girl, and I kept telling myself that she probably didn't even know what she was saying, but hearing stuff like that still cuts you to the bone.
Bec, you may have a point. I'm sure I had my serious face on, and according to my son, it can be pretty scary! Funny thing, I never did find anything called Clean Safe. I went home and asked Cody what it was and he said he didn't know. I told him he'd written it on my shopping list, and he said, "I did?" We finally figured out he meant KleenGuard furniture polish!
John, thank you for visiting my blog. I've been training for 3 1/2 years now, and will be testing for shodan in July. I only know of one other Isshinryu practitioner who blogs, and she doesn't post as consistently as I'd like her to. ;-) She is Perpetual Beginner, and you'll find a link to her site in my sidebar.
P.S. My first major was art, but I changed it because I felt so inadequate compared to the other art majors. I'd never had any art lessons or anything. It was just something I always wanted to do. I now regret that as the biggest mistake I ever made. I ended up majoring in Psychology, and after graduation, realized it was a field I had no interest in working. I wish I'd stuck it out in Art.
Hey Becky - Unless your photo lies, you are far from ugly. Having your serious face on is a definite possibility though. A couple of the kids at our dojo actually fled when I turned around during a kata and they saw my face.
I'll be posting something new here shortly. I got out of the habit of daily blogging during the extended family sick stuff.
