Dodge Charger

Funny how things can trigger memories. I was walking across the parking lot this morning, going to work, and I saw a silver Dodge Charger. It made me remember this...

Oh, twenty some odd years ago, I was working at Wal-Mart one night when we had a commotion. Someone came running up to me and told me that there were police up on the roof. The front doors were locked, but then, the store had already closed and they would have been locked anyway. When it was time for us, the employees, to leave, the manager had us all gather up by the door. He made sure everyone was there, then told us to go straight to our cars, and straight home. Then he unlocked the door and let us out.

Sometime later, I found out what the deal was. There was this guy, Michael Lee Lockhart, who was wanted in Florida for raping, mutilating, and murdering a 14 year old girl*. Somehow, he'd made his way to Beaumont, Texas, and had run afoul of the law there. When the officer tried to arrest him, Lockhart killed him and fled in a stolen corvette. He drove to my town, where the police chased him for a while until he crashed the corvette right across the street from the Wal-mart. He then acquired another vehicle and fled back to Beaumont. He was eventually caught, but he'd led the authorities on a merry chase.

Only the constable wasn't so merry. He was furious. The next day, he went out and bought himself a souped up Dodge Charger. Now, there are probably men around who could tell you all about the liters, and the V's, and the HP's and all that. Me, not so much. All I know is that constable said,

"Ain't nobody ever going to outrun me again!"

*Since that time, I found out he'd also raped, mutilated, and murdered a 16 year girl in Indiana. He was executed in 1997.
