That Great Light In The Sky

It's been a rough week here in the South.  If  you've been reading my blog lately, or following me on FB, you know kind of what we've been going through down here.  Between days and days of driving rain and flooding, topped off by violent storms with tornadoes and hail, well, it's been rough.  That's all I can say.

This morning, when I woke up, such a beautiful sight met my eyes, I had to share it with you.

Do you see?  Do you see what it is?  Sunshine.  That's what it is.  Sunshine.  I'd almost forgotten what it looked like.

I also want to thank everyone who has called or messaged to check on me.  I'm fine.  The floods didn't come anywhere near my house, and the really bad storms last night passed to the South and East of where I am.  Lots of people were affected, though, so keep them in your prayers.

Just a quick note, if you think you might want to donate to flood relief, please, please, please don't send stuff.  Most stuff ends up being tossed anyway.  It's much better to donate to a reliable charity, but NOT the Red Cross.  They are as corrupt as a socialist government.  I suggest the Salvation Army or your particular religious denomination's disaster relief fund.

While I was keeping up with all the watches and warnings, I managed to get two hats knit.

This first one is with my Red Heart Fall colorway.  I tried an 80 stitch cast on, but all it did was make the stripes a bit wider.  No pooling.  Except at the beginning of the decrease rounds.

This one is an 88 stitch cast on, and the yarn is Red Heart Super Saver in Pinata colorway.

That's the kind of pooling I was hoping my Fall colorway would do.  I thought it would look like autumn leaves, in my mind.  I guess we'll never know.

I was sitting there this afternoon, wondering what to cast on next.  I looked over at my big box of hat yarn in the corner of my living room, then came up with a solution.  I closed my eyes, and dug way down to the bottom of the box.  Whatever I grabbed is what I would cast on with.  It just happened to be this.  Pale Yellow is the colorway.

I'm thinking I may do a patterned hat with this one, since the color is so light.  Not sure what, though...I'll figure it out.

In the meantime, I got three more of the records I'd ordered from Ebay.  This first one I have on cassette tape, but the last time I tried to play it, the tape got all tangled up, and I didn't want to risk breaking it.

If I can get my software installed and get it converted to MP3, we'll be good to go for a while.  I haven't tried installing the aforementioned software, because my ancient computer is so slow, I know I'm just going to end up frustrated.  I'm almost to the point where I want to buy a new computer, but not quite.

Anyway...onward.  This record is one I bought because I thought the cover looked familiar.

However, after listening to it, I'm not so sure.   It's still a good album, so I'm not sorry I bought it.

And this one, I just bought.

Unfortunately, I wasn't that impressed with it.  That's probably why there were so many of them available.  Eh, it happens sometimes.

I've got one more album on the way, then I need to pick up the last three from the National Geographic collection.  I'm thinking about hitting some of the local thrift stores to see if they have any vinyl, since I seem to have created a monster.

On the sea shanty front, YouTube has this neat little thing called autoplay.  You can pick a song and just let autoplay go, and it will select similar songs and play them.  That's how I discovered this little gem -- and another group to follow.

This really makes me want to get back out onto the water.

I mean, really.

And The Rain, Rain, Rain

Came down, down, down,
In rushing, rising rivulets
Till the river crept out of its bed
And crept right into Piglet's

It was raining so hard this morning, my dogs took one step out the door, then turned around and came right back in.  I hadn't planned on leaving the house today, but by mid morning, the really deluge-y part of the storm had passed, and the water on my street had gone down some.

After lunch, I took a chance and ran into town, because I needed milk.  The water was high, but not over the roads -- at least not where I was going.  I snapped this picture on the way home.

That isn't the lake.  It's a cotton field.  For you locals, it's at the corner of Papermill Rd and 51 Highway, coming off the ramp from 55.  The Dollar General store and Mr. Monroe's looked like they were on islands.  My friend sent me this one, taken in the back parking lot (shipping area) of the plant.

Then, these two were posted on Facebook.  This first one is the ball fields and park on Jasper Neely, behind Walls.

And this one is the spillway and campground out at the lake.

And we've still got one more day of rain to go.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got to go see if Lowe's has any good deals on Gopher wood.

Now that I have my milk, I mean...

PS, if you want to see more flood photos, I've shared several on my FB page, and made them public so anyone can see them.

Rain, Rain, Rain

And the rain, rain, rain came down, down, down in rushing, rising rivulets...

Day three.  Day three of rain.

Not sprinkling, drizzly rain, either.  Heavy, driving rain.  And we've still got at least two more days of rain to go.  We're already under a flash flood warning, and it's going to get worse before it gets better.

Normally, I do my shopping on Friday, but this week, I'll take the better part of valor and stay home, huddled under my blanket, knitting,

and watching what may be my new favorite singing group ever.

Since my back yard is totally flooded by now, and I don't have a door mat, yet, I very carefully put one of the spare puppy pads by the back door.

And Jesse just as carefully stepped over it.

Sigh, sometimes, I jes' don' know 'bout that dog...

Hallacious Heartburn

I had a nice post all planned out for you this evening.  Oh, it was a wonderful post.  It would have made you laugh, it would have made you cry.  It would have moved you.

I was going to tell you about how it was raining so hard this morning when I got up, Rylea wouldn't go outside to do her business.  She wouldn't even come out from behind the bed.  Yeah, I could have shoved her out the door, but she'd have just come right back inside.

And I was going to tell you about how I'd already set my mind to have to mop up a puddle when I got home, and how pleasantly surprised I was to find there wasn't one.  She was dancing by the back door, but she didn't go inside the house.  It kind of worries me when she does that, though.  I don't want her to mess her kidneys up holding it too long.  I'd rather she peed on the floor than hurt herself.

Then I was going to tell you how when I got to work, someone else had gotten their gloves stuck, because there they were -- just hanging there, not falling.  And I was going to tell you some other stuff, but alas it was not to be.

After eating some leftover cookies, but not having milk to go with them, I got the most hallacious case of heartburn I've had in a long, long time.  So, no post.  I'm just going to leave you with two things.

One, the first of my second -- or third, I forget which -- round of record buying has arrived.

The cover was so familiar I felt sure it was one we had when I was a child, but there was that tiny element of doubt.  However, when I put it onto my record player

and heard the opening notes of the first song, I knew.  Without a doubt, it was one of my childhood memories.

Oh, and look at this.  My record player has slots in the side where you can close the dust cover, and your record will still play.

Cool, huh?  It allows the machine to be smaller, but still play full size LPs.

Secondly, here is the first of the promised videos from The High Kings.

Now, while you are enjoying the music, I'm going to hustle myself off and drink another cup of vinegar water, as this heartburn is trying to once again rear its ugly head.

One Of Those Days

I knew straight away what kind of day it would be when I got to work and my gloves got stuck in the PPE machine.  Sigh...

And it's not like the candy machine where you can just put another dollar in.  Once it's issued you your two pair per week, that's it.  I tried to find my supervisor to get him to do the over ride thingy, but it was nearly lunch time before I tracked him down.  By that time, I figured, eh, might as well keep wearing the old, nasty pair I had on.

Funny, you'd think as uptight as my work place gets about PPE, they'd be less stingy with it.

After said gloves got stuck in said machine, I trudged over to my brazing stand, where I discovered that my B shift counter part had left me another round of my favorite game:  Guess The Unlabeled Order.

That's right.  No pick list.  No parts tickets.  No work order.  No print.  Not even a handwritten note on a piece of scrap paper.

And so goes the day...

Along about 10:00, one of my coworkers came over and told me it was snowing up in Oxford.  But did we get any?  Noooo, all we got was rain.  Lots and lots of rain.  And a forecast of rain for the next four days.

Coming back from lunch, another coworker came over and put her hand on my arm.  I'll have to admit, my first thought was, "Why the heck is this crazy lady putting ice on me?"  But it wasn't ice.  Her hands were just that cold.  And wet.  Despite predictions of temps in the mid 50s, it never made it out of the 40s.

But the day was not all bad, as the first round of stuff I bought in my Amazon tax refund spending spree arrived!

First up, a field guide to local birds.

I needed this.  Now I'll know what my birds are, rather than "some kind of sparrow" or "a titmouse, maybe", or "what the heck is that?"  And a book is so much easier than trying to identify them from a website, too.  That's an exercise in frustration, I tell you.

Like I needed another set of cookie cutters.  But look, this one has four Texases, a longhorn, a jalapeno, and a star.

I've been wanting one for a long time, and finally, my mini helmet collection is complete.

OK, technically, the LSU helmet is Cody's, but when I asked, he said he'd rather leave it here, so I'm kind of counting it as mine.

He also has an Indianapolis Colts helmet around here somewhere.  It got packed up when I moved, and there's no telling where it is.  One of these days, I'll find all these things I know I have but don't know where they are.

A week or so ago, someone posted a video in one of my knitting groups about a different kind of row counter.  It looked so cool, I thought, "I need one of those."  However, the $20 price tag was way too steep for what you got for it.  I was about to move on and live without it, when one of the members piped up and said, "I can make some for the group."  I gladly accepted her offer, and here it is:

I'll have to find the video again, to see how to use it.  I shall need to write her a thank you letter,  too, which I can do now, because look, I have a writing desk now!

Or a reasonable facsimile thereof.  I do hope someday to get a real writing desk.  I can't find just the right one, though.  The really nice ones are way out of my current budget, and the ones I can afford are cheap, particle board crap.

I'm still kicking myself for selling that roll top desk I used to have.  When I got my first computer, and computer desk, I didn't think I'd ever need it again.  Truth is, I didn't really miss it until I got back into real writing here recently.  Now I wish I still had it.  Oh well, one day I'll have one.  For now, my TV table will have to do.  And I am going to keep writing, because of things like this:

It makes it all worth it.

Random Thoughts Of A Sunday Evening

1.  You all, I'm sure, have heard of earworms by now.  You know, those little songs that get stuck in your head.  I get them all the time.  Thursday at work, this was my ear worm all afternoon long.

2.  My Christmas cactus is blooming again.  Crazy thing.   That's why I call it a Whatever Cactus.

3.  When I was a kid, there were some words I couldn't pronounce correctly.  Cash register is one of them.  Since I can't seem to do anything normally, I had no trouble with the word register.  It was cash that tripped me up.  Until I was about 6 or 7, I called it a "cagister register."

4.  Wandering around on YouTube, I've been watching old NFL compilations of hardest hits.  The ones from the old days are much better.  Even five years ago, the hits were harder, and the game was more exciting.  Roger Goodell is trying to turn football into a sissy sport.  If we wanted to watch a sissy sport, there is always soccer.

5.  Another word I couldn't say when I was a kid was sub-marine.  Again, I had no problem saying marine.  It was sub I couldn't say.  Some of you already see where I'm going with this.  Yep, I spent all Thursday afternoon singing, "We all live in a yellow sudden marine, a yellow sudden marine, a yellow sudden marine."

6.  I went on Ebay and ordered five more records.  I think I need an intervention.

7.  I'm really enjoying my long weekends, but boy am I ready for some overtime.  Well, my bank account is.  Probably because I ordered all those records.

8.  I finished another hat.

This is the Red Heart Super Saver in Fall colorway.  I used an 88 stitch cast on.  Next time I'm going to use an 80 stitch cast on and see if it pools a bit more.  I know some people don't like pooling, but I do.  They make yarn now that pools on purpose.  I'm going to get some, once I've gotten a few more hats knit out of what I already have.

9.  There was something else I wanted to tell you, but right now, I can't remember what it was.  I'll probably think of it about 10 minutes after I publish.

10.  I found an Irish group on YouTube called The High Kings.  I'm going to be featuring some of their videos between now and St. Patrick's Day, because I can now that I've discovered I do in fact have Irish ancestry.  And I've got the DNA results to back up those claims.

11.  Goodnight and joy be to you all.

Spending Spree

I got my taxes done early this time around.  I've noticed in general, people who are expecting a refund do theirs early, while people who have to pay out put theirs off to the last minute.  Of course, there are exceptions, but still...

I got my my refund this week, and as promised, the bulk of it was applied to my credit card debt.  H&R Block has this thing, though, where if you get part (or all) of your tax return on an Amazon card, they'll pay you a 5% bonus.  Knowing there are things I wanted to buy, I chose this option for part of my refund.  I received the code for the card Tuesday, and promptly went on a spending spree.

I'll get to that later.  First I want to show you the much more subdued spending spree that went on at Wal-mart this morning.

*Ahem* I can neither confirm nor deny that I may or may not have bought enough half price Valentine candy to make the checkout clerk gasp and ask, "Is this all for you?"

OK, moving right along...

I'd bought myself some new house shoes last October, and have been extremely disappointed in how fast they fell apart.  I'll wear them until it warms up, then toss them.  In the mean time, for those slightly less chilly days, I found some slipper socks on clearance.  I got Baby Groot,

and Ariel.

Those seashells look really weird, but they'll do for wearing around the house.

Once those were safely in my buggy, I wandered over to the garden center and picked up a new pair of gardening gloves, seeing as how my old pairs were getting quite worn out.

While I was there, I got some Lily Of The Valley roots.

I'd had some at my old house, but they never really took off.  I'm not sure if it was too muddy where I had them or what.  I love the flowers, though, so I'm going to give them another try.  The only conundrum is where to plant them.  The package says partial to full shade.  The only shade I have is in the back yard, where they are likely to get dug up by naughty dogs.

I might try putting them up by the house, where all that English Ivy was before I ripped it out.  The dogs don't dig up there, so they may do OK.  Plus, I have some border stuff left over.  I can make them a slightly raised bed, which may help keep the dogs out.

I also inadvertently discovered that the best time to go to the store is 6:30 AM.  There was hardly anyone there.  Of course, I'm usually at work by then, but still.  It felt weird to have my major chore for the day done by 8:30 and have most of the day still before me.  I felt like I should get some house work done.  Alas, it was not to be.

Shortly after I got back home and got the groceries put away, the mail carrier came.  And what did she leave me?  Here's a hint, it was the first item I bought with my Amazon tax refund card.  Have you guessed yet?  It was....

THIS!!!!!

My record player!  My record player is here!

I carefully pulled it out of the box and unpacked it,

then ran into the bedroom and grabbed the top record out of the stack.  It just happened to be the Ed Ames Christmas album.  I put it carefully on to the player and voila'!  Music!

Real music!  Not that sterile, clinically clean music of CDs and digital downloads, but real living, breathing music!  I ought to be ashamed of how giddy I got over this, but I'm not.

Never be ashamed of what makes you happy.  And if people laugh at you, just remember, it's because they're miserably unhappy themselves.

Next step will be to figure out how to install the software and convert all my records to MP3, so I can listen to them without wearing out the vinyl.  And also, share some of my favorites with you.

So, there I was, happily listening to National Geographic folk music records when I happened to glance out the front window and saw the FedEx truck pull into my drive way.  Huh?  What had I ordered through FedEx -- or rather, what had I ordered that would be delivered by FedEx?  Amazon and Wal-mart usually deliver by USPS or UPS.

I stepped out and got the package, and when I saw the return address, oh yeah, I remembered what it was.

See, me and my friends Kristine and Sue seem to have this round robin enabling thing going on.  Last week, there was a discussion in one of our FB groups about ads that appear in your news feed.  It would seem, because of our recent obsession with fountain pens, a mutual friend had been seeing fountain pen ads in her feed.  We all had a good laugh about it, then Kristine mentioned that the featured pen was one of her dream pens.

Sigh, guess who had to go and order one.  Yep, I have another new fountain pen!

This is one of those high dollar pens, but they were offering it in a Valentine's Day deal, which included the pen, five pink ink cartridges (plus the black one already in the pen), and a bottle of refill ink, plus that refiller thing.  It has a name, but I don't remember what it's called at the moment.  All that for less than the regular price of the pen.  Naturally, I had to take advantage of that.

I want to show you one cool thing about this bottle of ink.  It has a little roll of blotting paper in the bottom!

Isn't that cool?

I'm understanding why Kristine called this one of her dream pens.  It writes sooo smoothly!  I don't ever want to stop writing with it.

Now, I've got to go dig through my address book...

Paper!!

Today was one of those days.  Most Mondays are one of those days, but today was even more one of those daysish than Mondays usually are.  The morning seemed to go by very quickly, but after lunch the day put its brakes on and...just...dragged.  Said dragging day was made even worse knowing what was coming for me...

See, I've been on a letter writing kick here lately.  If you've read my blog at all, you no doubt have figured this out.  I'd bought some nice parchment type paper.  No, it wasn't real parchment.  It was just regular paper dyed -- or printed -- or however they do it -- to look like parchment.

As I was writing a letter a few days ago, I looked at that paper and decided it just wasn't parchmenty enough.  Naturally, I did what any red blooded American would do.  I went online and ordered some parchmentier parchment paper.

I spent the whole day -- that whole twelve hour shift -- at work just knowing that package of parchmentier parchment paper was going to arrive today, and I wasn't going to be able to play with it until after I got off.  The closer the end of the shift got, the more time seemed to slow down.

At long last, that interminable day finally terminated, and I went flying out of the plant, shoving people down and running over little old ladies in my haste to get home to my new parchment paper.

OK, not really, but saying I calmly walked to my car and leisurely drove home isn't nearly as exciting.

Arrive home, I finally did, to find my package of paper stuffed carelessly into my mailbox by a mail carrier who didn't seem to care, because it's not her package of parchmentier parchment paper, so why should she?.   I wrestled the package out of my box, flew into my house, then ran out back and flung some corn in the general direction of my deer, and at long last I was ready to open the envelope and revel in the parchmetier parchment paper I'd ordered.

And there it is.

Is that not the parchmentiest of parchmenty parchment paper you ever did see?

Of course, it's not real parchment, either.  Just colored to look like it.  However, it is good, heavy weight paper -- almost card stock.  I can't wait to get to writing on it!  Hmmm, now who should get a letter next?

Why, yes I do get ridiculously excited about such things.  That's just who I am.

In other news, I finished the hat I was working on.

Personally, I think I like the orange with the camo stripe better.  But that's neither here nor there.  They'll both keep someone's head warm.

Firewood and Camouflage

Before I dive into today's blog post, I have a little business that needs tending to.  As most of you have heard by now, Google + is shutting down in April.  If you've never heard of Google +, it was a social media site -- Google's alternative to Facebook.  It never really took off.  I liked it, but could never convince any of my friends to join.

You would think as much as people grouse and moan about Facebook, they'd be more willing to try out some of these alternatives, but no.  I think they'd just rather stay put and gripe.  I've joined several other social media sites, but it's like pulling teeth to get people to sign up for them.  Maybe in the near future, I'll do a post about some of them.  And yes, I do have a clear favorite. Which none of my friends are on.  "Not user friendly" they say.  But when I ask what about them isn't user friendly, they can't answer.  I think they're just more disposed to suffer while evils are sufferable than to right themselves by throwing off the sites to which they are accustomed.

Anyway, the whole point of all that is, if you follow my links from Google +, and want to keep reading (because I really want you to keep reading), I would encourage you to book mark the site, or follow me on Feedly.  Other alternatives including friending me on Facebook, or following me on Instagram.

Now that that bit of housekeeping is taken care of, on to my exciting Saturday life.  Woo hoo!  I know you can't wait!  All righty, then...

Friday afternoon, I was out back hauling up some firewood, when I noticed my pile was beginning to get a little low.

No big deal, I thought, because I still have all this other wood from the tree I had cut down.

I hauled out my splitting wedge and Mjolnir and got to work.  I got three pieces "busted" as they say in this part of the South, and began to realize why our ancestors never got fat and had heart attacks.  That is hard work, I'm telling you!  Our ancestors were definitely made of tougher stuff than we are.

Still, I'm going to try to get out and get one or two pieces split per day until it's all ready for the wood stove.  Hopefully, I'll get it done before it gets too hot.  I've thought about buying a gasoline log splitter, but once this pile is all taken care of, I won't have a need for it any more.  I'd have to sell it at a loss, and don't really want to go there.

I went out today and got a couple more pieces split, then came inside and cast on a new hat.

That new yarn I bought looks much more like hunting camo than the Woodsy I was using before.  Yes, I'd been saying the name wrong.  It's not Woodland.  It's Woodsy.  Like the pollution owl.  Remember him?

Help Woodsy spread the word,
Never be a dirty bird

Yeah...

As you can see, I'm about halfway through the orange stripe, then I'm going back to the camo for the crown and decreases.  I might put an orange pom pom on it.  I haven't decided yet.

That's about all I've got for today, unless you want to hear about washing dishes and doing laundry.  Oh, I did get a letter into the mail, and have another one about halfway written.

Again, if I have your address, it could be for you!  You'll just have to watch your mailbox and see!

Insomnia

Insomnia hit me hard this week, especially Tuesday night.  I went to bed around 7:00, because when one gets up at 3:00 AM, one tends to go to bed around 7:00.  I tossed and I turned, and I looked at the clock, and I tossed and I turned some more.  I looked at the clock again and thought, "Dang, I could have stayed up and watched the SOTU after all."

I got up and got a drink of vinegar water to quell the heartburn that was rising in me, used the bathroom, and went back to bed, where I finally drifted off to sleep...only to wake up at midnight, not to sleep again for the rest of the night.

I briefly considered calling in and staying in bed, but I didn't.  I got up and went to work, where I was surprisingly energetic, considering I'd only gotten about 2 hours of sleep the night before.  I was going to blog Wednesday, but along around 6:00 PM, the lack of sleep finally caught up to me, and I simply wilted.

To bed I went, where I fell asleep almost immediately and slept all night.  And the next day, you'd think I's be feeling great after all the sleep I'd gotten, but no.  I was absolutely dragging all day.

That was Thursday.  I felt so draggy, I went to bed early and completely forgot to watch The Big Bang Theory.  Thank goodness for Hulu and DVRs, huh?  The bad news is, last night, insomnia hit me again, and I tossed and turned, but only until about 11:00 when I drifted off to dream -- of what, I can't remember.  At least we had today off, so I could sleep in.

Sort of.  I mean, I do still have dogs.

Let's just say, I was up before the sun, but slept until after the time I'd normally be at work.  OK, OK, I got up at 4:45.  I built a fire, made a cup of coffee, and spent a relaxing morning knitting and savoring my coffee, before getting dressed and tending to payday errands.

Having finished my latest hat,

I wanted to cast on another one with the colors reversed -- i.e. the body of the hat in the woodland, and the stripe in orange.  Alas, I just wasn't sure this would be enough yarn for that.

Since I had to run to Wal-mart anyway, I went to the yarn section to pick up another skein.  They didn't have the woodland camo, so I got this regular camo.

Between that and the orange, I ought to be able to make lots of hats in hunting colors.  Some of them may even end up being Christmas gifts...

On impulse, I picked up another skein of this Fall, as well.

I knit Beverly a clapotis out of it several years ago, and it turned out really pretty.  And, I figured the Fallish colors would go well with the bright orange.  Or I may have some solid greens or reds that will match.

Let's move on to something really exciting.  During the week, the last two records I'd ordered  arrived.

This was definitely the one I remembered listening to in my childhood.

Memories are weird things.  I remember the album cover because of the way he is holding his hand in the photo.  I remember his thumb sticking out, and as a child, wondered why he'd done that -- held his hand that way.

I'm still visiting Ebay, but I think I may hold off ordering more records for a while.  Work is really slow right now, so we're not getting the overtime we'd usually be getting along about now.  I don't know for sure what's going on, just that sales are low.  I'm thinking the extreme cold up north might be affecting them.  That last cold snap, a week or so ago, it was colder in Chicago than in Antarctica.  I'm sure it'll pick up before it's all over, but for now, I need to be careful with my finances.

As many of you know, I've been writing letters lately.  I've sent several out, and I'm sure you'll all be thrilled to know that the one I sent without an envelope arrived safely.  I can now add Regency fold to my traditions.

The other day, one of my friends posted how she'd been sick when my letter to her arrived.  I was almost embarrassed at her gushing effusiveness, but I was so glad she liked it.  I copped a few lines of her post to share with you here:

Better than any medicine, it truly lifted my spirits! Of course I will be replying, on paper! I don’t have wax or pretty stamps to seal it with, but I do have some stationary I bought a while back, just because it was so pretty! So, as soon as I find it, I’ll send a reply, and hopefully brighten her day as she did mine!!!
I’m telling you, texting & phone calls may be quicker and more convenient, but nothing beats an actual letter from a friend! Thank you, Becky! ❤️

I have been so enjoying reviving this old fashioned tradition.  It's even more fun when people write back!  Yep, I got one myself with a wax seal of its own!

Inside was a beautiful hand made card, and most of you will know who made it.

And finally, I don't drink wine.  I never have, even though my job has made me consider taking up drinking on more than one occasion.  Still, when I saw these on clearance, I had to pick them up.

As soon as I'm done here, I'm going to go make some hot chocolate or hot tea in one, and get busy knitting on this hat.

Oh, and I've got a couple of letters to write, too....

Laters...
