Dogs On Thursday

It's been a while since I've done a Dogs On Thursday, too, so here you go:

Yes, I've only got a picture of Rylea.  Even after 5 1/2 years, Jesse is still camera shy.  Even after 5 1/2 tears, I can't pet him without him ducking.  I can't put on my belt without him ducking, and heaven forbid he see me with a stick in my hand.  I just wonder what the poor feller went through before I adopted him.

There's something I've been considering lately.  It's been just over 2 years since I changed my hair color.  It used to be medium ash blonde.  Now, it's dark auburn.  I like the color, but I'm considering going back to a lighter color.  The main reason for that is, my roots are almost completely gray now, and the darker my color is, the more my roots stand out between colorings.  I'm thinking if I lighten the color, they won't be so obvious.  Yes, I know they have that root stuff, but it costs almost as much as a regular bottle of dye.

I'm kind of bummed that Walmart has stopped carrying my color.  I've been ordering it online -- along with my gel and conditioner and lactose enzyme supplements that Walmart no longer carries.  That entire sentence is kind of pointless, and I'm not sure why I even wrote it...

The question is, go to a lighter red, back to blonde, or more towards what used to me my natural color of brown?  What do you think?

Goodbye Old Fellow

Beverly called me today and told me they'd lost their old dog Artex.

He was almost 16, and was in so much pain, they couldn't stand to see him suffer any more.

Sometimes, you just know when it's time, and it was time.

I'll miss him, too.

All the dogs have always just gone back and forth between our two houses, so he was a little bit mine, too.

This is him at Christmas 2005.

Goodbye, old fellow.  You were a good friend.

A Dog Person

If you've read my blog for any length of time--like two days-- you've probably figured out that I'm pretty much of a dog person.  Photos of Rylea --and Katie before her--fill the pages.  There are even a few, well, at least one, photo of me with a stray Italian dog.

I can't imagine my life without a dog.  But you may be surprised to learn that this was not always so.

We were never allowed to have dogs when I was growing up.  We did have a couple of puppies, but didn't keep them very long.  Then there was the stray dog that followed my brother and sister home from school...three times.  The first two times, my dad loaded the dog up into the car and took him back to the school.  The third time he found his way to our house, my mother said that we must be meant to have him.  But when he wouldn't stay inside the fence, we had to give him away, too.

I was 15 before I was allowed to have a dog that I could keep.

She was an American Eskimo named Meika.  I kept her until I went into Navy Boot Camp, then gave her to my sister.  For all of my childhood, I thought it was my mother who didn't like dogs.  Mainly because she is the one who always had to tell us no.

But after she and my dad separated, before we knew what was happening, she had seven dogs.

Dad had told me the story before, but it wasn't until then that I made the connection.  It had happened when Dad was 13.  He had a dog named Rex.  Now, Dad had had a few dogs before, but they didn't last long.  One got ran over.  Another got stolen right off of his front porch.  They actually saw a hand reach down and grab the puppy.  They ran outside, but didn't see anyone, and they never saw that puppy again.  But this dog he had, Rex, well this was the worst of all.

Where they lived at the time, when my Dad had Rex, they had this really mean neighbor girl.  I asked my Aunt Bonnie about her one time.  As soon as she figured out who I was talking about, she exclaimed, "That awful girl?"  So, though I never met her, I could pretty much figure out that the girl was spoiled, and selfish.  She used to come over to my dad's back yard and tease Rex unmercifully.  She'd throw rocks at him, and hit him with sticks, all the while being careful to stay beyond the length of Rex's chain.

One day, she misjudged.

She got a little too close and Rex bit her. Though it was no fault of the dogs-- he was definitely provoked-- the girl's father came over and shot Rex that same day.  My dad was heartbroken, and just gave up on having dogs after that.  Can't say as I blame him.    So, we always had cats as pets when I was growing up.

Soon as I was old enough, though, I got myself a dog.  Except for the five years I was in the Navy, I haven't been without one since.

And, I don't expect I ever will be.

Dogs On Thursday

A couple of weeks ago, I bought this toy

for the neighbor's dog.  You put treats inside it and it is supposed to keep the dog occupied for hours trying to get the treats out.  Well, Indy (I've finally decided to give him a name), hasn't quite got the hang of it yet.

Rylea, on the other hand...

I see you in there, you food you!

Hmmm, maybe if I roll it on its side.

No, then I'll just chew a hole it this thing.

Grrrr, come out you food so I can eat you!

I was watching Rylea come up the front steps, and she looked like a seal waddling across the ground.  Yes, she is that fat.  I don't understand it.  We walk nearly every day, and they're long walks, too.  Not piddling little 15 minute walks, but usually between 45 minutes and an hour.  I have her on fat dog dog food, but she is still a little blubber ball.  She should be up for shots soon, so I'm going to ask the vet about her weight and what else I can do to help her get fit.

And I've just about broken my self imposed moratorium against casting on already.  I wanted to knit this yarn

up just to see how it did knit up.  I've decided to make a couple of little hats out of it.  I think I'm going to *looks around furtively* swatch first, since I've never knit with DK weight before. Swatching doesn't really count as casting on, does it?  No, of course not...

Now if you will excuse me, there is football to watch on TV...

Monday, Moanday

When I got up this morning, the little dog was gone.  He was still gone when I got home from work, but then, about 8:15 PM, I heard a whining outside.  I wondered why Rylea would be whining, but it wasn't her.  It was the little foxhound.  I loved on him a bit, and put him some fresh food and water out.  If he's going to come by for dinner every evening, I need to get him some regular dog food.  I've got Rylea on fat dog dog food, but this guy sure doesn't need any weight management.  Unless you count putting some on.  He's very thin.

Yesterday, I tried to get my Anniversary Mystery Shawl '10 out and work on it.  I got one round done, and put it back away.  The mojo just isn't there.  I don't know where it went.  I have hardly knit anything in two weeks.  Even the blankie square I started is incomplete, and I started it yesterday.  Well, Wednesday I have the day off of work.  No reason, I just wanted a day off.  I'm going up to Southaven and gonna meet Amy B at Hank of Yarn.  It's so bad that I don't even know what project I'm going to take to work on while we visit.  I'm sure I'll think of something, though.

On the other hand, I did get my new fan club packet in the mail.  I actually got it last week, but haven't been able to fit it into a post until today.  In addition to all the normal fan club stuff (including a new membership card, which I didn't seem to get into the photo)

I got a new photo, schedule and, team photo.

And the certificate, of course.

It's not much good without the certificate.

It has my name on it.
