It's been 37 years since there has been a Triple Crown winner. Since Affirmed last won in 1978, so many horses had come close. But not close enough.
A lot of people had given up hope. It was even stated a year ago that there would never be another one. They were wrong.
This morning, we woke up in a world that has added the 12th member to that very exclusive club. American Pharoah won the third and final leg of the Triple Crown, and he won decisively.
He led from wire to wire, and seemed to get stronger as the race went on. I had flashbacks to Secretariat. So much so that I half expected the announcer to shout, "He is moving like a tremendous machine."
And indeed he was, pulling away at the end, leaving no doubt in anyone's mind that he deserved this victory.
And the nation cheered, long and loud.
It's been a long, long 37 years, but the wait is over.
Until next year.
